Alabama's largest water system is asking customers to consider the benefits of flushing a little less this summer.

The Birmingham Water Works, with more than 750,000 customers in five counties, has launched an education campaign to point out the huge amount of water saved if people flushed their toilets just one less time each day.

Mayor Bill White was aware of criticisms against Washington, D.C.'s chief water and sewer engineer when he hired him last week to run Houston's public works department, the mayor's spokesman said Saturday.

Federal environmental regulators and local activists in Washington have blamed Michael Marcotte, 53, and other top managers at the D.C. Water and Sewer Authority for responding too slowly to high lead levels in the district's drinking water and for doing a poor job of informing the public about the health risks, the Washington Post reported Saturday.

About 200 officials from across the region gathered Friday to celebrate the grand opening of San Antonio's first project to harvest extra water from the Edwards Aquifer and store it in another underground aquifer.

The $215 million project in South Bexar County will use a 30-mile pipeline to take 7.3 billion gallons of excess water from the Edwards Aquifer — the San Antonio Water System's sole source of water for decades — and store it in the Carrizo Aquifer for use in dry times.

The project also included the city-owned utility's first drinking water treatment plant
